Building a Sustainable Future: Defining My Career as a Woman in Nuclear by Abbie Tonkin

“National Apprenticeship Week feels like the perfect opportunity to reflect on my time at Premier Modular and highlight some of the amazing experiences I’ve had.”

“I started my career in construction in 2023, joining as a Modular Design Apprentice. Since then, I’ve had opportunities to be involved in nationally-significant projects, broadening my skillset and becoming part of a diverse team, including the nuclear supply chain on developments such as the crucial net-zero project at Sizewell C.”

“Our work at Sizewell C builds on our experience at Hinkley Point C, and we’re all in-tune with some of the logistical challenges that major nuclear developments like this face. Being in remote locations adds an extra challenge and ensuring all the right support facilities are in place often means creating ‘pop-up’ towns around them to support the workforce.”

“Bringing these towns to life is where modular comes into its own as a high-quality and rapid solution. With loads of experience across a range of sectors, from education to healthcare, we manufacture temporary buildings that serve a huge range of purposes, for example as shops, doctor’s surgeries, accommodation and even schools, supporting the successful delivery of all-important nuclear power sites that will provide clean energy to the UK.”

“I feel incredibly grateful to work at Premier Modular, in an environment where I can thrive, develop and really make a difference. I am constantly challenged to help deliver results across the wider team, which is a skill I will carry with me throughout my career and seeing my work support some of the country’s flagship projects makes me really proud.”
